How we built the Microsoft Learn MCP Server

Microsoft built a remote MCP Server to expose Microsoft Learn documentation to AI agents via the Model Context Protocol standard.

• •The server offers three tools: microsoft_docs_search (titles, sections, URLs), microsoft_docs_fetch (full article content), and microsoft_code_sample_search (code snippets and examples)
• •Hosted on Azure App Service using the official C# MCP SDK, backed by the same content vector store powering the Ask Learn RAG experience
• •Tools are designed around the agent workflow (search-then-read), not mirroring internal API parameters like topK, OData filters, or hybrid search options
• •Tool and parameter descriptions act as user manuals for LLMs; small wording changes measurably affect tool activation rates, prompting an automated evaluation loop
