What we know about Iran’s Internet shutdown

This post documents Iran's Internet shutdown in early January 2026, observed through Cloudflare Radar data amid widespread protests.

• •On January 8, announced IPv6 address space dropped 98.5% at 11:50 UTC, signaling the start of deliberate connectivity disruption
• •Between 16:30–17:00 UTC, overall traffic fell nearly 90%, with major providers MCCI, IranCell, and TCI going offline
• •By 18:45 UTC, traffic from Iran reached effectively zero, completing a full disconnection from the global Internet
• •Brief connectivity windows appeared on January 9 for some universities and 1.1.1.1 DNS access, but were cut off again by 15:00 UTC
• •Prior to the shutdown, HTTP/3 and QUIC usage dropped sharply on major networks starting December 31, suggesting layered filtering was implemented first
